Black to Basics…

The new year means many of us are decluttering and organizing. Closet cleanouts are going on at my house. The capsule wardrobe has gained popularity in recent years, advising us to maintain 37 multifunctional pieces. I don’t follow that plan but I have compiled a list of wardrobe basics that will help you style for any occasion.

*Two black dresses…one appropriate for business and funerals and another LBD (little black dress) that can be paired with rhinestones and killer shoes for an evening out or basic flats for running errands.

*A blazer in navy or black…a piece that can take you from the boardwalk to the boardroom! Layer it over a graphic tee for a casual look or with a pencil skirt for a professional style.

*A good fitting pair of jeans…this does NOT mean a pair that breaks the bank! You can find great jeans at upscale consignment shops.

*A denim jacket…I’ve had mine 15 years. They never go out of style! I’ve worn mine with boots, tennis shoes, stilettos and everything in between!

*A fitted black turtleneck…another piece that can be “serious” with a pair of dress slacks or “sexy” with some faux leather leggings!

*A pretty pair of pajamas…this one may sound unusual, but you never know when you may have an unexpected stay in the hospital or share a room with someone on a business trip. We all have days, especially in the past year, when we stay in our pj’s. These days are often because we feel bad or ‘blue”. Wearing a tee and mismatched pants will only feed those feelings. Put on a pretty set of pajamas and see how your mood lifts!

*Some accessories that I suggest are a black tee, a white tee and a pearl necklace (faux is fine!).

You know that I’m fond of bright colors, bold prints and big accessories. These are just some basic staples that you can mix and match to have something appropriate for any occasion! Happy styling!
